Tonga backpackers are few and far between. The main island of Tongatapu is a flat coral island which takes about an hour to travel around by car. there are a few nice beaches on its western tip and several interesting archaeological sites in the ancient capital on the east side of the island. The present capital with the King's palace is at Nukualofa on the north coast facing the lagoon and offshore islands. Nukualofa Town has a few budget accommodations and guesthouses. The Haapai group about 30 minutes flight north of the capital is a truly laid back South Seas backwater with picturesque fishing villages in amongst a myriad of islands. Travel between the islands is by local fishing boat and the few roads have little traffic except people walking, on horseback or cycling There are only a handful of guesthouses, mostly around Pangai Village on Lifuka Island. Slightly further north is the beautiful Vavau Group. This is a great spot for exploring the myriad of islets and waterways by boat, for snorkelling in the coral gardens and for watching humpback whales and their calves between May and October. During this time, Vavau is a hive of activity, especially around Neiafu Harbour which is one of the main sailing hubs for yachties crossing the South Pacific. The waterfront bars and restaurants are full and skippers are looking for crew to sail to New Zealand or America. Outside of this busy season Vavau is, by comparison, a ghost town. There are a couple of backpackers and guesthouses in Neifau Town which make a good base for exploring the islands on day cruises. Search for Tonga Backpacker Accommodation
